About

This blog chronicles my attempts to build a wearable everyday wardrobe by sewing my own basics, with a few special makes thrown in every now and then. I hope my blog helps people to see that making a simple, unfussy wardrobe of everyday handmade clothes is achievable and fun.

I live in North London and work in tech startups.

I’m a freelance journalist currently writing a regular page for Making magazine (UK) about great blogs and websites. I’d love to include you this month. The piece would include a short write-up accompanied by a couple of images and, of course, your url. If you’d like to be included, could you send me over a couple of high resolution images of your recent posts please (300DPI)? If you could send them over as soon as possible, that’d be great!

I have a pretty tight deadline with this, so if you could get back to me as soon as possible, that’d be great.

Any questions, feel free to give me a shout. Look forward to hearing from you.

    Many thanks,
    Jennifer Gaskin

I just came across your blog and thought I would leave a message as I read your post about fabric shopping in Paris.
I run an online fabric shop and thought that you might be interested in checking what I have in stock as I specialise in fabric unique or rare to the Uk market and I stock a lot of French Designers (and a lot more are coming in in January!)
Have a look and let me know what you think. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any more information about the fabrics. Look forward to hearing from you .
    Kind Regards,

    Maud Morris

Totally loving your blog right now!!! I’ve got a beginners dressmaking course starting soon, and I’m keen to create my own versions of some of the patterns you’ve used. You’ve got great choice in fabric too :)
Have you done many classes? Every done any online classes? Ever thought about teaching/tutoring sewing?
Anyway, just wanted to let you know I’m really digging your creations!

I am also loving your blog especially the links to indie patterns. Ever since my husband passed on his old I Pad mini to me, I’m quite addicted to your posts. I currently work as a dressmaker making bespoke clothing for disabled people (Clothing Solutions based in Bradford) , I have tweeted you in the past regarding some fabric which you featured. I was wondering though, when you download the PDF patterns, are they reasonably easy to put together when they come printed on sheets and sheets of A4 paper?
    Keep it up – Janice

    Hi Katie,
I just purchased simplicity pattern 1620. I saw the pattern and thought that it would be a great go to dress or blouse. I live in Hawaii and we have a store that has so many fabrics in Hawaiian prints and so on. My question is , can you tell your method of sewing of the yoke using the burrito method? Would love to finish off as much as I can using this method. Thank you so much. I love sewing and enjoy your articles.

    Hi Katie,
I love your blog! The dress that you are wearing in the ‘Better Pictures Project’ can you tell me what pattern it is? http://whatkatiesews.net/category/tips/
I love it, where can I get my hands on the pattern? I am fairly new to dressmaking, but have been sewing craft items for years. Thank you for all your hard work, it is inspiring. x

Your website is absolutely wonderful. I love your collection – it is so inspiring. I have noticed that you use some beautiful printed fabrics and I was just wondering if you have any recommendations for where to buy fabrics online?
I would be so grateful for your help.

Hi Hannah – if you search my blog for ‘ebay’ I have a post about my favourite eBay shops for fabric. Perhaps I’ll do another with more shops!

Hi Katie. Thanks so much for making all of this information available. It’s very inspirational! I was wondering if you had any advise for beginners? I’ve been sewing VERY simple things (like pillow cases) for years but I’ve never sewed a garment. I’m looking for resources (books, blogs, classes) for leaning sewing techniques (basics like when to use different stitches, needles, etc). I’d also like to know if you have any sewing machine advise. I’d like to get a reliable machine that won’t end up in a land fill and one that I can grow into (and that will support more advanced techniques as I learn them). Any advise from you would be appreciated. Thanks so much!
